  • How much is my rocking horse worth?

    • This is such a difficult question to answer as each horse is unique and they can vary in size and condition. Esteemed makers such as FH Ayres & G & J Lines will command top prices whereas a one-off homemade horse can sadly have little value. We generally advise that an antique horse be left in its original condition wherever possible as this is more appealing to a collector although of course sometimes you do need to do a full restoration, in this instance, we always try to keep to the original style and pattern. For more modern horses it is worth doing some research such as browsing the internet (eBay is a good place to start) for similar horses sold, to give you an idea of their value.

  • Are rocking horses valuable?

    • Antique rocking horses are often quite valuable, top makers such as FH Ayres and G&J Lines will command top prices and kept in good condition will increase in value over time. Original paint and features are normally more desirable from a valuation point of view. Modern horses are less of an investment, although good quality makers such as Stevenson Bros will no doubt be the FH Ayres of the future, so these are a good buy. Homemade horses generally hold little value but of course can be of huge sentimental value to the family so should not be overlooked.

  • How do you identify old rocking horses?

    • Most of the time identification is made possible by experience and having knowledge of the various makers traits, some parts such as the design of the pillars and style of the brackets or even how a fetlock is turned can help with identification. Some horses are easily identifiable, such as Collinson of Liverpool, these horses can have quite a scary appearance!

  • What are old rocking horses made of?

    • Most old rocking horses are made from several different types of wood, the legs may be made from a different wood to the body for example. With an unpainted wooden horse, you will sometimes see that the legs are a different colour to the body where a different type of wood has been used. Often the stand or bow is made from pine with the best quality being made from a harder wood such as oak.

  • How do you clean an old rocking horse?

    • Carefully! Use a mild diluted soap to gently wash off the worst of the dirt accumulated over the years but if the paint is at all flaky or unstable we would recommend letting an expert take over.
