‘Harley’ is a F H Ayres rocking horse mounted on a safety stand, circa 1925. F H Ayres is considered to be the ‘Rolls Royce’ of makers, and this horse is likely to have been sold in Harrod’s or Selfridges.
We believe much of Harley to be original, he has had a new saddle cloth at some point and we have replaced his stirrups and stirrup leathers with aged ones as these were missing. The ‘repair’ to his saddle is an old one and is actually not a repair as the flap is present underneath but it has actually been added to cover pommel holes that are present on both sides.
He has glass eyes and a real horsehair mane and tail. He has 4 holes in his stand that we believe were used to fasten him to the floor to provide extra stability, this would suggest he may have been homed in a nursery or school at some point. His stand has chamfered edges which is superior to the basic straight cut edge.
HIs measurements are:
Height 99cm
Length 110cm
Width 38cm
