“Icarus” is a very rare and special F H Ayres ‘D’ type rocking horse on the original D type safety stand, c 1930. He is a number 5 in size, standing an impressive 46″ tall and has a wonderful lifelike stance, with a very turned neck and head facing toward his left. He has a beautifully detailed face with glass eyes, and even has a carved tongue. His whole body is extra carved with wonderful muscle detail and tone, showing off his muscular legs and neck – this model is such a delight for a horse lover to just admire.
We have had to totally refinish Icarus as he came to us in a poor state with a grey gloss paint coat, however we have stayed true to the original look and dappling patterns. He has then had to have a new mane and tail and finally a new set of top quality removable leather tack to finish his look.
The ‘D’ type was the best quality horse made by F H Ayres and dates to around 1900. These are highly sought after and rarely come to market – a true collectors piece.
Icarus is a special horse and a very desirable investment.
