Orpheus

“Orpheus” is a wonderful extra carved F H Ayres “C” Type rocking horse on a safety stand, c1934 – 1938.

“Orpheus” is a very rare and special F H Ayres ‘C’ type skin covered, extra carved rocking horse, c1934 – 1938. He has a beautifully detailed face with glass eyes, and even a carved tongue. He was part restored by Stevensons in 1991, and has just had a freshen up with us too, but we have of course left his skin covering which whilst worn in places still shows his unique “C” Type finish.  

His stand has fluted runners and has been serviced and refinished so now rocks freely. Unfortunately his original saddle top and saddlecloth were just disintegrating due to age, but we have sympathetically restored both to keep him going and I have photographs which we will provide for his new owner. He still has his original saddle pommel which was fitted as an option to give young ladies the chance to learn to ride side-saddle. Orpheus had been in the same Essex family since new, so is a real piece of history available to you now.

Made by F H Ayres and dating from around the mid 1930’s, these are highly sought after and rarely come to market – a true collectors piece. Orpheus is retired from riding now, but is still such a delight for a horse lover and collector to just admire.

Orpheus is a special horse and a very desirable investment – there are truly just a handful of this model left with their original skin covering remaining.

Please be aware these are mostly old horses and as such may show some minor age related characteristics.Orpheus is still rideable, however we would recommend him as a collectors piece now.
