‘Perseus’ is a dapple grey F H Ayres ‘B’ Type extra carved rocking horse on a safety stand, circa 1930.
Perseus retains his original paint and most of his original features, including the stand. We have tried to retain his overall originality and character as much as possible whilst giving him a new lease of life by reusing as much original leatherwork as possible and by keeping the original pins, fancy nails and rosettes. He has glass eyes and a delicate, friendly face, very slightly turned to his left.
Perseus has had to have a new saddle and saddle cloth, a new real horsehair mane (but he has his original tail) and new stirrup leathers. His stand has been serviced and re-waxed, and bear the makers stencil ‘5’ to show his size. It has the double fluted runners which show he is the finer ‘B’ type.
His measurements are:
Height 97 cm,
Length 127 cm,
Width 41 cm
F H Ayres are known as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of rocking horse makers and a horse of his quality would most likely have been sold in Harrods and Selfridges. Being extra carved makes him the top of the range model and Ayres horses with original paintwork are much sought after.
Perseus is fit and ready to ride, although he would look equally as good as a piece of fine furniture, and is a true heirloom to pass along the generations.
